Kim Kardashian Calls Moon Landing “Fake”

Kim Kardashian has stirred up a fresh round of online chatter, this time by questioning one of history’s most iconic achievements—the 1969 moon landing.

During a recent episode of Hulu’s “The Kardashians,” the reality star and entrepreneur voiced her skepticism about the Apollo 11 mission, suggesting the event may have been staged.

The conversation quickly escalated online, prompting NASA’s acting chief to step in and set the record straight.

Kim Kardashian Sparks a Conspiracy Debate

On “The Kardashians,” Kardashian shared her belief that the moon landing never actually happened, calling it a fabrication from the height of the Cold War era. Speaking with her “All’s Fair” co-star Sarah Paulson, Kardashian said she’d been deep into videos and interviews suggesting astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong never walked on the lunar surface.

“I’m sending you, like, so far a million interviews with both Buzz Aldrin and the other one [Neil Armstrong],” Kardashian told Paulson.

Paulson, intrigued but cautious, replied she would “go on a massive deep dive” of her own. Kardashian referenced a viral TikTok clip claiming Aldrin accidentally revealed the moon landing was staged. The clip, often misrepresented, shows Aldrin responding to comedian Conan O’Brien’s childhood memory of watching the moonwalk. When Aldrin replied, “No, you didn’t,” conspiracy theorists took it as confirmation of a hoax.

However, the full interview revealed something different—Aldrin was clarifying that TV networks aired animated re-creations during the live broadcast, not denying the moon landing itself.

NASA Steps In With Facts

Instagram | secduffy | Duffy emphasized NASA's dedication to space exploration with the upcoming Artemis Moon return.

NASA’s Acting Administrator Sean Duffy didn’t waste time addressing Kardashian’s claim. Hours after the episode aired, he posted on X (formerly Twitter):

“Yes, @KimKardashian, we’ve been to the Moon before… 6 times! And even better: @NASAArtemis is going back under the leadership of @POTUS.”

Duffy reaffirmed the authenticity of the Apollo missions, emphasizing NASA’s ongoing commitment to space exploration through the Artemis program, which aims to return astronauts to the Moon in the coming years.

“We won the last space race, and we will win this one too,” Duffy added.

Buzz Aldrin’s Side of the Story

Buzz Aldrin, now 95, has long defended the authenticity of the Apollo 11 mission. In 2022, Reuters debunked the viral clip used to imply Aldrin “admitted” the event was faked. The report confirmed that his words were taken out of context. He was talking about broadcast footage, not denying the landing.

NASA and the National Air and Space Museum have also corrected common misconceptions used in conspiracy videos:

1. The Flag Movement - The flag looked like it was waving because it had a rod across the top to keep it extended. There’s no wind on the Moon.
2. No Stars in Photos - The cameras’ exposure settings made stars invisible in the bright lunar daylight.
3. Boot Prints - The boot tread patterns differ because astronauts used several suit and boot designs during testing.
4. Lunar Gravity - The Moon has about one-sixth of Earth’s gravity. That’s why astronauts bounced instead of floating away.

Kardashian Doubles Down

Despite being fact-checked, Kardashian remained unconvinced. When a producer asked for clarification, she reiterated her stance:

“I don’t think we did. I think it was fake,” she said, citing online videos of Aldrin as her evidence.

Kardashian even questioned physics itself: “There’s no gravity on the Moon. Why is the flag blowing? The shoes don’t match. Why are there no stars?”

Though she acknowledged that people would “say I’m crazy no matter what,” she encouraged viewers to explore the topic on TikTok—platforms often rife with misinformation and misleading edits.

Why the Moon Landing Still Matters

Instagram | kimkardashian | The Kardashian example shows how selective clips easily bring back old conspiracy theories.

Apollo 11’s 1969 landing stands as one of humanity’s greatest achievements. It represented far more than engineering excellence—it was a rare moment of unity and awe in a fractured world. The mission’s success has been preserved in countless photos, instrument readings, and physical artifacts that continue to inspire generations.

NASA continues to push back against misinformation by keeping its historical records open to the public and ensuring transparency in all future projects. Through the Artemis program, the agency plans to return astronauts to the Moon—including the first woman and first person of color—proving that exploration is still central to humanity’s story.

The Ongoing Power of Misinformation

Conspiracy theories like the so-called “moon landing hoax” survive on half-truths and context-free snippets. Kardashian’s recent comments, likely made offhand, show how quickly old myths can regain traction online. Social media’s echo chambers can turn a casual remark into a viral narrative—no matter how much evidence says otherwise.

Still, the facts are overwhelming: the moon landing happened. NASA’s official records, scientific data, and the accounts of the astronauts themselves all point to one undeniable truth—human beings really did take that “giant leap.”

The debate may generate clicks, but the proof stands firm—etched in history and imprinted in the lunar dust.
