When How I Met Your Mother (also known as HIMYM) first aired in 2005, it was a huge success, seemingly stepping in for Friends, which had ended a year earlier. Carter Bays and Craig Thomas were college friends and writers for the Late Show with David Letterman. When they were asked to pitch a network series, they recalled the time in 1997 when Bays spent a lot of time at Thomas's apartment whining about being single with his longtime girlfriend (now wife), Rebecca.

Bays took the role of Ted, Thomas took the role of Marshall, and Rebecca took the role of Lily. Several real-life incidents were incorporated into the sitcom, such as Bays inviting someone to a wedding when he didn't have a plus-one or calling Rebecca a "bitch" during a brief separation with Thomas.

The Cigarettes Challenge

The show's central couple, Marshall and Lily, spent a lot of time on set together with their interpreters. The spouse of Jason Segel, who smoked, couldn't handle the scent of cigarettes; therefore, there was a small problem. Because Alyson Hannigan detested kissing him after he smoked, she set up a wonderful technique. In this way, the actor had to give her $10 each time he was found smoking. He gave up smoking due to a cute and unconventional little game.

MacLaren’s Pub Is Based On the Writer’s 4 Favourite Bars

The New York City pub MacLaren's Pub from How I Met Your Mother is modelled after some of the favourite late-night hangouts of Craig Thomas, Carter Bays, and other Late Show writers.

These consist of the following:

• A midtown bar called McGee's is close to the Ed Sullivan Theatre, where the Late Show is filmed.
  Famous Hell's Kitchen bar McHales shut down in 2006.
• Chumley's, a venerable bar in Greenwich Village, has now closed.
• Fez is yet another closed business on the Upper West Side.

Carl MacLaren, Carter Bay's assistant, is honoured with a MacLaren's name. By coincidence, Carl is also the name of the bartender in MacLaren's How I Met Your Mother.

It turns out that the "HIMYM" show's creators had a significant influence in writing the song's infectiously catchy tune. The band The Solids, of whom Bays and Carter are both members, is the author of the song "Hey Beautiful." Thomas plays the drums, and Bays sings and plays the guitar.
