The BBC is planning a wide-ranging tribute for David Attenborough’s 100th birthday on May 8, with programming scheduled across television, streaming, and radio. The celebration will feature new productions, archival highlights, and a live national broadcast, reflecting more than seven decades of wildlife storytelling.

Programs will air on BBC One and stream on BBC iPlayer, with additional features scheduled across BBC Radio networks. The lineup mixes newly produced documentaries with restored classics and conversations that revisit some of the most influential moments from Attenborough’s long career.

New Documentary

One of the central projects is Making Life on Earth: Attenborough’s Greatest Adventure. The film revisits the making of the landmark 1979 series Life on Earth, widely considered a turning point in natural history broadcasting.

The documentary includes new interviews with Attenborough, along with members of the original crew. Together, they recount the challenges of filming during an era when international air travel was still evolving, and color television was only beginning to reach global audiences.

The official synopsis notes:

“With fascinating insights, they reveal the highs and lows of filming the series during a truly exciting moment in television history, when global jet travel and colour filming were still in their infancy. Along the way, the crew encountered multiple challenges, including a coup in the Comoros, being shot at in Rwanda, and threats from Saddam Hussein’s army in Iraq.”

When “Life on Earth” first aired in 1979, it drew an estimated 500 million viewers worldwide. The series strengthened Attenborough’s reputation as one of the most influential wildlife filmmakers in modern broadcasting. His close encounter with mountain gorillas in Rwanda remains one of television’s most replayed and celebrated moments.

“Secret Garden” Brings Wildlife to Britain’s Backyards

Another major addition is “Secret Garden,” a new primetime series created for BBC One and BBC iPlayer. Across five episodes, the series explores five distinct gardens across the UK, revealing the wildlife that thrives in these carefully tended spaces.

The series description states:

“Across five episodes – and five gardens in the UK – Attenborough reveals the lives of the often charming, occasionally daring, always secretive animals that inhabit the hidden world right on our doorsteps.”

The program highlights species including pine martens in the Western Highlands, dormice in South Wales, swallows in the Lake District, otters in Oxfordshire, and blue tits in Bristol. Although gardens appear peaceful, the rules of the wild still apply.

The synopsis adds:

“Theirs is no cosy existence – even in these beautiful and seemingly genteel surroundings, the rules of the wild still operate.”

The series also focuses on conservation. Gardeners featured in the episodes demonstrate how residential green spaces support biodiversity. With 80 percent of Britons having access to a garden, these areas collectively cover more land than all national nature reserves combined. The choices made in backyards directly affect struggling species and broader wildlife populations.

As the description concludes:

“Through meeting the gardeners that have created these wild oases, we discover how our nation of animal lovers and gardeners can do their bit to save struggling species… You’ll never look at your garden in the same way again.”

Live Event

Instagram | providusbankig | BBC One will broadcast a live Royal Albert Hall tribute to David Attenborough’s 100 years.

The tribute culminates in “David Attenborough’s 100 Years on Planet Earth,” a live broadcast from the Royal Albert Hall. The event will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer and will feature the BBC Concert Orchestra alongside special guests.

This live celebration will trace a century of exploration and discovery, combining dramatic wildlife storytelling with live performances of music from Attenborough’s landmark programs.

Public figures and leading environmental advocates will deliver reflections on his influence and the future of conservation.

Archive Screenings and Streaming Collection

Throughout the week leading up to May 8, BBC One will broadcast special episodes from Attenborough’s most recognized series. These include “Planet Earth II,” “Seven Worlds, One Planet,” “Blue Planet II,” “Planet Earth III,” “Frozen Planet II,” and his recent film “Wild London.”

Viewers browsing BBC iPlayer will find an extensive Attenborough collection featuring more than 40 different series. The archive begins with foundational projects like Zoo Quest and stretches through later programs such as Kingdom, Parenthood, and Attenborough and the Giant Sea Monster.

Tribute programming will also extend to BBC Radio networks, where special broadcasts will accompany the television lineup.
The centenary schedule reflects the remarkable range of David Attenborough’s career—one that has blended field exploration, scientific communication, and environmental advocacy for decades.

By combining archival restorations with new commentary and a live orchestral tribute, the BBC offers a thoughtful retrospective. The programming also illustrates how nature documentaries evolved over time, moving from early color-film experiments to the immersive high-definition productions now familiar to global audiences.
